Ocracoke’s history of a passion for figs is celebrated annually at the Ocracoke Fig Festival, taking place this year on August 16 & 17, 2019. This family friendly event is a favorite of both locals and visitors.
Local vendors provide fresh figs, fig preserves, local cookbooks, fig-smoked BBQ, and other fig-tastic items. Learn about Ocracoke’s fig history and culture, and bring the kids for old-fashioned crafts and games.
Take a stroll along any shaded street in Ocracoke village and you’ll naturally notice the town’s love of all-things fig.
Fig trees are everywhere in this coastal town, and during this annual celebration, visitors and locals alike can celebrate the fig through a myriad of music, dancing, history, activities, and of course, plenty of fig goodies.
The two-day event features a wealth of activities that take place at the Ocracoke Preservation Museum, or the nearby Community Square in the heart of the village.
Visitors can enjoy a Traditional Ocracoke Square Dance with caller Philip Howard and music by Molasses Creek on the initial night, and then dance the night away with the Ocracoke Rockers.
On the following day, the fig steals the show with a coveted Fig Cake Bake-Off, plenty of fig cake samples, a “fig marketplace” with plenty of arts, crafts and baked goods, and lots of games and family-oriented activities for visitors of all ages.
With historical programs along the way that explain the significance of the fig in this small coastal village, visitors can enjoy a wealth of educational activities, good times, fun and games, and lots and lots of fig fare at this delicious festival that puts the humble fig in the spotlight.
The showpiece of the Fig Festival is the Fig Cake Bake-Off. Everyone is welcome to submit a cake in one or both categories, Traditional or Innovative. A panel of judges chooses the winners. And the best part? Free samples for everyone after the contest!
In addition to miles of pristine beaches, an abundance of fresh local seafood and the legend of Blackbeard the Pirate, Ocracoke is also known for figs. While figs have always been popular with Ocracoke residents, visitors certainly have joined in the appreciation of this locally grown fruit and the history of Ocracoke Figs.

The Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum and the historic Community Square on Silver Lake Harbor are the perfect settings for this year’s festival. The Ocracoke Fig Festival celebrates Ocracoke’s past and preserves this island tradition for future generations.

The Fig Cake Bake-off
The showpiece of the Fig Festival is the Fig Cake Bake-Off. Everyone is welcome to submit a cake in one or both categories, Traditional or Innovative. A delicious feature of the event is the free sampling of fig cake after the judging.
Feast on Live Music and Dance
There will be a Traditional Ocracoke Square Dance with caller Philip Howard and music by Molasses Creek. Join the Dance Party with the Ocracoke Rockers.
