See wooden boats of all shapes and sizes displayed around the Southport Yacht Basin. Boat builders and owners will be available for discussion. The event will also feature maritime arts and crafts, maritime demonstrations, kids events, and a seafood chowder cook-off.
Boats will be displayed in and around the historic Old Yacht Basin in Southport, North Carolina. Visitors will be able to meet and talk with wooden boat makers and owners and to vote for their favorite boat entrant for the People’s Choice Award. A team of judges will also award three other prizes: Best Powered Boat, Best Non-Powered Boat – Row/Paddle, Best Non-Powered Boat – Sail.
The very popular Nauti-kids events will return to this year’s show, where the little sailors will be able to build (with or without help) their own boats and test their sea-worthiness. Exhibits from the North Carolina Aquarium and The Ft Fisher Underwater Archeology Branch will enhance the afternoon activities.
More boats, both in and out of the water, and more nautical/ maritime Arts and Crafts vendors are expected at this year’s show, which has been growing every year. Nautical & maritime demonstrations are planned along the waterfront, and the model boat exhibit will return to the “Old Visitor Center” Southport.
A Taste of Cape Fear’ at the 9th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show will once again feature Chef Craig Blanks of the Frying Pan Restaurant in Southport’s iconic Yacht Basin. His award-winning Seafood Chowder uses only fresh ingredients and heavy cream that creates a delicious, thick base for his corn, shrimp, potatoes, etc., and reveals the aroma and taste of a spicy, sweet, ocean breeze. His Shrimp & Grits uses a special recipe of grits which includes hefty portions of cream, butter, and cheese which lays the foundation for his Andouille gravy, to which a generous portion of shrimp is added. An indication of how good it is would be the record set for the most bowls every sold at the event!
As an extra special treat, our early morning coffee provider, Side Street Bakery, will offer desserts. Water will also be available. A limited number of seating spaces will be available under the food tent as well.
Tickets will go on sale at 10 am and the Taste of Cape Fear event tent will open for serving from 11 am – 2 pm or until the supply runs out. The cost for a bowl of either of these delightful offerings will again be only $5.00 and will be served with oyster crackers. Napkins and spoons will be provided.
The Southport Old Yacht Basin is located at 309 West Moore Street, Southport, NC.
